Introduction

Welcome to Tim Kliphuis Studio, an online school dedicated to the art of Gypsy Jazz for string players of all levels. Whether you’re diving into the realms of improvisation for the first time or you’re an experienced player looking to gain a deeper understanding, my studio offers a rich, interactive online learning environment designed to elevate your playing and immerse you in the vibrant rhythms and melodies of Gypsy Jazz.

The Studio is formed by a community of more than 70 subscribers, and this number just keeps growing. If you are curious about what has led me to start this virtual studio, I have already written a post about it. You can read about it here.

How the Studio works

Every month, I unveil a new “Theme of the Month,” providing a structured focus on a specific topic. This theme is intricately linked to a new Challenge accessible to Studio Enthusiast and Pro users, as well as to the group lesson exclusive to Studio Pro users. As part of this monthly theme, you can anticipate a new lesson each week that delves into the topic at hand.

You’re also welcome to explore the extensive collection of materials already available on our platform. The depth of your exploration is entirely up to your ambition. In the following sections, I’ll provide more detailed guidance on how you can maximize your learning experience with us.

Navigating the Studio

The Studio is intuitively designed to ensure easy navigation, allowing you to focus on what truly matters – your musical journey.

At the header, you have two menu bars:

A brown bar that gives you access to your account, the search function, and your account settings.

A green bar that will accompany you while you scroll up and down. You will have direct access to each section of the website: Dashboard, Crash Courses, The Library, Backing Tracks, Challenges, The Green Room.

About Sections

The Dashboard serves as your primary landing page upon logging into the Studio. It offers a convenient snapshot of essential updates and activities within the community.

Here, you’ll find a quick overview of the current Theme of the Month, upcoming lessons (Studio Pro), the latest activity in The Green Room, the current Challenge (Studio Enthusiasts & Pro’s) , and my most recent published posts.

It’s your centralized hub for staying informed and engaged with all that’s happening in the Studio.

What are crash courses?

These are intensive, topic-specific courses designed to fast-track your learning in specific areas of Gypsy Jazz, from technique to improvisation.

At the moment you can enjoy the online version of the GJ First Aid Kit book which gives to newcomers a handy insight into the realms of Gypsy Jazz and what to do in a jam session.

More crash courses are about to follow in the upcoming months!

Crash Courses function independently of the Theme of the Month content. This means that if you have extra spare time, you can receive guided instruction on very specific topics. You are free to repeat any crash course as many times as needed, providing an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into a particular topic and enhance your skills.

What is The Library?

A treasure trove of resources. The Library contains every post that has been published in the Studio since the start in 2022. That includes licks, etudes, warm-ups, tips, etc..

You can access the content by simply clicking on each of the cards. Additionally, you can filter all posts by topic and level using the options available in the top bar.

What are backing tracks?

Backing tracks, often called play-alongs, serve as invaluable practice tools to enhance your skills with each tune we explore. These tracks offer a rhythmic foundation consisting of double bass and strumming violin, without the melody. The goal is to provide you with the freedom to experiment, improvise, and refine your playing, allowing you to develop your musical proficiency and creativity.

You can access all the backing tracks I have published here. Each track includes references to the original authors, a lead sheet, and a music player.

Yes, tracks are available for download, allowing you to practice anywhere, even offline. Simply click the download icon next to the lead sheet icon.

While personal use is encouraged, sharing tracks directly with others is not permitted. However, you can invite friends to join the studio to access all resources.

How do challenges work?

Challenges are a great way to push yourself in your progress and put into practice newly acquired skills. By leaving your comfort zone, every month I will give you a challenge based on the Theme of the Month. Each challenge focuses on a particular skill or piece, providing you with a goal to achieve.

At the end of the challenge, I will provide you with feedback about your performance. The fun part is that as you upload your challenge, you can listen to and react to other participants’ challenges.

To upload your challenge video, you can use either YouTube or Vimeo.
